As the years go by, it’s only natural to accumulate more personal items, from gifts we receive from friends and family, to objects we buy for ourselves, to cherished works of art our kids spend hours working on at school. One by one these things get brought home and placed somewhere in our house, whether it’s a prominent position on the fridge or fireplace mantel, or just kind of tucked away, in a drawer or under a bed. Over time this all starts to add up, especially since many of us have a hard time letting go of old items to make way for new ones. This leaves us with a surplus of stuff around the house and thus, clutter begins to mount.

Clutter can be a real nuisance to live with, and it’s best to get out in front of it, before things really start to pile up. Now it may be a bit early for spring cleaning, but identifying how to avoid massive clutter build up is surely of great use no matter what time of year it is. In an article for Houzz, Laura Gaskill highlights 5 decisions, like keeping every single book you buy, which result in cluttered homes and offers some practical solutions.

This article is quite handy for anyone aiming to keep a new home clutter free or trying to declutter a lived in home. It can also be rather useful for anyone considering putting their house on the market, as many buyers simply have a hard time visualizing themselves in a home that’s just packed with stuff, no matter how perfect the home is.

The five decisions Gaskill identifies are below, but you can check out the full article here.

  1. Keeping Every Book You Buy, Whether You Like It or Not
  2. Keeping Everything Your Child Has Ever Made
  3. Pretending You’ll Have More Time Later to Put Stuff Away
  4. Avoiding Paperwork Until It Threatens to Take Over the House
  5. Overstuffing Your Cupboards With Extras, ‘Just in Case’
